Memo to Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz: Microsoft is the Wolf. The Wolf Likes to Eat Sheep. Yahoo is now a Sheep.
In a stunning move this week, Yahoo’s CEO Carol Bartz agreed to let Microsoft take control of Yahoo. Yes, you read that right.
Guess who now controls the Yahoo search business, the most lucrative and important part of Yahoo? Microsoft does. Who is responsible? Carol Bartz.
Yahoo agreed to use Microsoft’s Bing search engine to run its searches, according to Bloomberg.com. Yes, Yahoo will get to keep most of the money it makes from its ads but that’s not the point. Not at all.
A search engine tells people where to go. Google was and is successul because its algorhythms created a superb user experience and 99% of the time you could find exactly what you wanted in just a few seconds.
Can Microsoft’s Bing service do that? No, not at all. Microsoft bought a hundred millon dollars worth of ads to tell people how great Bing is and maybe some people will believe it. But most will not switch from Google because they know quality and Google is quality.
Guess what happened? Everyone started to believe the hype about Microsoft’s Bing search engine and how great it is, including Carol Bartz, and right away panic filled the air.
Within a couple weeks Yahoo was signing away its search engine to Microsoft and letting Microsoft impose itself into every part of Yahoo with the Bing search engine.
That is like inviting the wolf into the sheep pen. Do you think the wolf is there to watch over the sheep? No, the wolf is there to eat the sheep.
Thanks a lot, Carol Bartz. There goes Yahoo. Sure, it will save money by cutting down its expenses and it will be able to keep most of its advertising revenue. Who cares?
Internet search is the huge goldmine and Microsoft just got a whole lot bigger, but not necessarily better. And Yahoo? This is officially the beginning of the end.
The sheep can run around the pen for a while but the wolf is there to eat the sheep and that is going to happen whether the sheep likes it or not.
